In this course on the art of translation, we explore race and Italophone literature, with the latter defined as postcolonial literature written in the Italian language. The course will focus on translation in terms of race, by which we specifically mean the experience of Blackness as represented in Italophone literature and the social justice activism linked to these texts and their authors. For example, we compare Black Lives Matter movements in Italy and the U.S., writing collectives founded by Black Italian authors, art and music initiatives led by Afro-Italian artists, and more. In doing so, we deepen our understanding of the art of translation, and how it relates to the complex cultural contexts in which we live and how they can advance new ways to imagine race, Italy, and Italians.
