Jean Marie Schultz earned her doctorate in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley (1983), specializing in nineteenth- and twentieth-century French, Russian, and British literature. At Berkeley she served as Director of the Intermediate French language program from 1986-2002, designing from the ground up an innovative language-through-literature program.  She joined the Department of French and Italian at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2002, serving as Director of the French language program until she became department Chair (2020-2023).  She served as the UC System-Wide Education Abroad Program Director in France from 2011-2013. She was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques (2017) by the French government for her contributions to the dissemination of French culture.   

Her research interests include second language acquisition theory, curricular development, and foreign language literacy, with a particular focus on questions of bilingual identity. In addition to co-authoring the intermediate-level French textbook Réseau, she has published articles in the Modern Language Journal, French Review, Foreign Language Annals, and AAUSC. She has also contributed refereed chapters to a number of books on Applied Linguistics.
